Rationale / Vision

Founded in hope St. Mary’s CE (VA) Primary School is a place where all can find their voice, grow in wisdom and live well in community and service.

Writing plays a fundamental role in living out our school vision.

Growing in Wisdom

Our writing curriculum enables pupils to grow in wisdom by developing deep knowledge of language, grammar, vocabulary and the writing process. Through explicit instruction, modelled practice and carefully sequenced learning, pupils learn how writing works and how ideas are crafted. Pupils learn to think critically, reflect on their choices as writers, and understand how writing shapes understanding of the world. They explore a diverse range of texts; fiction, non‑fiction, poetry and real‑world genres.

Finding Our Voice

A core purpose of our writing curriculum is to empower every child to find and express their unique voice. Pupils learn that their ideas have value, that their writing can inform, persuade, entertain and inspire, and that they have something important to say. Through oral rehearsal, structured talk and exposure to high‑quality model texts, children develop the vocabulary, fluency and confidence to communicate clearly. They write for real audiences and meaningful purposes, helping them understand the power of their words.

Living Well in Community and Service

Writing plays a vital part in helping pupils understand themselves as members of a community. Our curriculum encourages collaboration, peer discussion and respectful feedback, helping children learn to support one another as writers. Through purposeful writing across the curriculum; such as reports, reflections, and persuasive pieces, pupils learn that writing can be a tool for positive change.
