Welcome to Year 5!

We hope you enjoy finding out about the learning we do and the fun we have.

Maths

Year 5 Maths lessons include warm up activities, initial problems, guided learning and independent learning each day. All children benefit from using practical resources to support their learning. We enjoy challenging ourselves in Maths lessons by applying our learning with daily reasoning questions and deeper learning problems.

Reading

Year 5 enjoy reading a new book each week and exploring a range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Children are motivated to find text evidence to support their answers to daily anchor questions.

Writing

In Writing lessons Year 5 work hard to develop their handwriting, spelling and composition skills. Children took part in a poetry competition and proudly became published authors when their poems were chosen as winning entries.

Religion and Worldviews

Year 5 show great thoughtfulness and reflection during our Religion and Worldviews lessons. They offer their opinions during discussions, debate big questions and listen respectfully to others. Children enjoy their learning in all three areas of the curriculum (Making Sense of Belief, Understanding the Impact and Making Connections).

Geography

In Geography we use and create a range of maps and atlases to support the development of our geographical skills. We also enjoy taking part in fieldwork.

Science

In Year 5 we enjoy learning through scientific enquiries. We plan a range of enquiry types to answer scientific questions. Thinking like scientists, we predict, record results, present findings, conclude and evaluate.

Music

In Year 5 we develop our singing skills by learning songs in a range of genres. We also learn to play instruments including the recorder and glockenspiel. We enjoy performing to an audience.

History

As historians we use a range of sources and evaluate their reliability. We use timelines to develop our chronological knowledge. We also enjoy learning by handling artefacts and exploring what they tell us about life in the past.

P.E.

In Year 5 we develop our skills in dance, gymnastics and games. We enjoy cooperating with others. We also have a weekly swimming lesson where we learn a range of strokes and water safety.

Art and Design

Our work in Art is inspired by our exploration of the work of artists and designers. We enjoy developing our ideas in our sketchbooks and making choices about what to include in our final pieces.

French

We have fun in French learning new language through vocabulary games. We find our voice to develop our spoken French and develop skills in writing in French.

R.S.H.E.

We enjoy learning about our relationships and health by exploring a different theme each half term. We discuss how what we learn can help us in our lives now at home and school and in the future.

Design Technology

In our cooking and nutrition topic we enjoyed making bread. We developed our skills in making dough and kneading. We understood how  yeast works and why bread needs to prove. We enjoyed tasting and evaluating our finished bread rolls.
