Our Pupil Parliament is democratically elected, with children across the school voting for the representatives they feel will best serve their classmates. This process reflects our school vision of living in community and service, encouraging pupils to understand responsibility, fairness and active participation. By giving children a real voice and involving them in decision‑making, we also strengthen key British Values such as democracy, mutual respect and individual liberty.
During the visit, the children learned about the vital role foodbanks play in supporting individuals and families who may be experiencing difficult circumstances. Staff and volunteers explained how donations are collected, sorted and distributed to those in need, helping our pupils to understand the importance of community support.
The children eagerly got involved in a range of tasks, including sorting food donations, checking items and helping to organise supplies ready for distribution. They demonstrated enthusiasm, teamwork and maturity throughout the experience, showing great care and respect for the important work being carried out.
For many of the children, the visit was an eye-opening experience. They reflected on how fortunate they are and spoke thoughtfully about the importance of helping others. The opportunity enabled them to see firsthand how small acts of kindness can make a big difference to people’s lives.
We are taking part in the WOW Walking initiative delivered by the UK charity Living Streets to help as many children as possible to experience the benefits of walking or wheeling to school. Our Pupil Parliament children have been chosen as WOW Walking Ambassadors to encourage as many children as possible at St. Mary’s to walk to school. The children have had training and earned their WOW Walking Ambassadors badge to ensure they are on hand to support the school in recording their journey to school as well as encouraging as many children as possible to walk or wheel to school.
